What are Flat Festoon Cables?
Flat festoon cables are designed for use in demanding environments where materials and products are constantly being moved by overhead cranes or hoists. The festoon cable is typically made flat due to space limitations and the need for continuous flexing. However, round festoon cable can be manufactured. Flat festoon cable is primarily used at seaports, mills, or large-scale manufacturing plants. The cables are track mounted and provide both power and control signals to crane and hoist systems.
Flat festoon cables are designed with extra flexible stranding for constant flexing that is required. Flexibility is commonly three to five times the cables diameter. The insulation is typically a PVC jacket that can perform from -40°C to 105°C. The conductor sizes that can be used are from 2/0 AWG to 16 AWG. If the cables are to be used in an extreme temperature environment, other materials such as neoprene can be used. Flat festoon cables are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. The cables can also be UL/CSA rated.
