FAQs about Instrumentation Cables
Why choose an instrumentation cable over a standard Mil-Spec or UL-rated electronic cable?
Instrumentation cables are typically chosen because of their ability to withstand harsh and demanding environments. These cables may be exposed to high and low temperatures, chemicals, and other physical stressors. In such cases, an instrumentation cable is the correct choice.
Terminology Notes
There are various terms used in the wire and cable industry related to this type of cable. They include:
- PLTC, which stands for Power Limited Tray Cable. These cables are typically used for applications that have power limited circuits such as an alarm system.
- VNTC, which stands for Vinyl Nylon Tray Cable. A VNTC cable is constructed using THHN or TFFN conductors with a PVC outer jacket. These cables are flame retardant.
- Plenum rated, which refers to the flammability and smoke specifications of a cable.
Instrumentation cable and tray cable are very similar and are sometimes used interchangeably.
